About the Department

The Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness (DAEA)  is one of the four academic units within the College of Economics and Business Studies (COEBS) at Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA). The Department has vast and long experience in providing quality training, conducting research for development, and offering advisory services in agricultural and agribusiness sectors in the field of applied economics, development and entrepreneurship.

The Department currently has 15 highly qualified academic staff offering undergraduate degree in Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness that is highly respected in the East and Southern African region. The Department also hosts Master of Business Administration (MBA-Agribusiness), Postgraduate Diploma in Agricultural Economics, Master of Science in Agricultural Economics, PhD in Agricultural Economics and PhD in Agribusiness.

Over the past two decades DAEA has attracted massive students from the region and abroad.  Moreover, DAEA harbours Sokoine University Graduate Entrepreneurs Cooperative (SUGECO), an organization that strives to create an enabling environment for graduates to invest in agriculture through forging linkages with sources of agricultural and agribusiness technologies, innovating market linkages and financial services appropriate for start-up businesses and providing institutional support to new SUGECO members’ businesses through business incubation.

The Department undertakes regular review of its programmes to cope with changes in the business environment and meet expectations of her clients and stakeholders.  The Department aspires to launch new programmes in the core areas of specialization including short-term training and retooling activities tailored to address unique needs and enhance clients’and stakeholders’ capacity to address technological and other emerging challenges.
